(12/28/04) double-date apocalypse

(Entered in paper journal at 6:45 AM at home in Harlem.)

Dream 1

I believe I was in an Adecco temporary staffing agency office in New Mexico. I sat between a man and a woman. We had all applied for an Americorps position. A couple woman in their thirties were behind a small, enclosed counter like a pharmacy booth, talking about us. From what they said, I felt that they might have found me a better job.

I walked into some strange side room with a black-plastic-lined pedestal in the middle. My dress shirt, pants, and tie were all now in a "fashionable" disarray. I held a pose. I felt like I was about to wet my pants.

In the other room the woman felt she was being looked over for any good job. So she tried to talk to the "agents" like she was smart. But she messed up what she was saying, laughed at herself, and sat down, feeling even more deserted than before.

Now TY (from the Albuquerque office I'd actually worked through) walked into the room I was in. She sat me down in a chair and said something like, "Well, congratulations. Get all your stuff ready to go back to New York. You're going to work with them." I was let down. "Them," in New York, meant my NYC Americorps program.

They gave me a little more info. She then said, "I still don't have the contact number for your arbiter yet." I asked if the arbiter was the Americorps representative. She said she didn't know. I said it may be one fo the really wealthy folks who help fund my stipend. But I thought that was a "patron."

Now (?) I was on a dark subway train. No lights. I might have been there with my brother. The train may have pulled out of a lit station. It was a shuttle train. It passed into a dark, dark platform with dim, green columns.

I opened the doors (as if they were swinging bedroom doors) just a crack to see the stop. I closed the doors quickly. If you let any light out or let anybody see you at that stop you were bound to be mutilated, murdered, and possibly eaten. I knew the shuttle train was heading to Times Square (although the image "in my head" was of Grand Central) and that it would get there quickly. So we'd be safe.

At some point my brother and I were walking through a log house in the dark. It may have been an empty house that we used to live in.

But now we were back on the train, once again in the dark. I opened the door. Now the dangerous area didn't even look like a platform. It was like the tracks had sunk into a building skeleton twenty feet or so below platform level. It was like an unfinished building inside a mine shaft. I quickly closed the door. This time I had felt the presence of people/demons.

I thought we were safe. But then I realized I had been shining a flashlight the whole time to see out into what otherwise would have been total darkness. I thought about the Times Square stop, hoping we'd get there quickly. But now I felt like I was no longer in the train but flying on my back, my head pointing toward Times Square, with a dim light shining over me.

I then "narrated," "I shouldn't have been surprised that I got my leg mutilated by the demons that day. The day began simply enough, with a double-date. Everybody was way too nervous upon seeing each other."

Now there was a visual, something like in this shape,

so that the heads of "six" people could be seen. All I know now is that the central figures were gloppy, clearish, bluish ghosts, one possibly with a human wrapped around it. Also one set of top and bottom figures were supermen. The other set I don't remember. They were all quivering like electrified jelly because they were so excited to be going out with one another.

(4/6/05) derailed subway train; only 3:11

(Entered in paper journal at 5:50 AM at home in Harlem.)

Dream 1

I was on a subway train with some friends or coworkers. I think the train was an A-train, but it may have been one of the orange trains. The train pulled out of its tracks, drove up onto the platform, and backed down into the track on the other (to us, the left) side of the platform. When we dropped down it was like we dropped into a train well fifteen or so feet deep. I saw all of this like I was in the front of the train and looking out a side window that was tall and wide and nice and clean.

I was now walking down onto a subway platform, I think for the N- and R-trains, while some friends waited in an upstairs area for me. When I got downstairs, pink taping blocked the platform off, except a small space, where three or four buy-eyed, white bums sat staring at me. There were a couple signs that said the N- and R-trains were out of service for a couple days. Then there was a list of trains running.

Something like an A- or C-train was coming at 6:33, then going downtown before heading back uptown. I figured that would be our best bet. I wondered if my friends would be okay with this or if I had gotten us so lost so far that they didn't even want to trust me anymore.

Dream 2

I lay in bed and looked at my clock. I saw that it was only 3:11, not 4:53 as I had thought it would be, based on the last time I looked at my clock.

(11/20/15) flubbing the revival; out of my way

(Entered in paper journal at 11:33 AM at Starbucks on 43rd Street and 3rd Avenue in Manhattan.)

Dream 1

I gave some speech about architecture at a lecture hall that looked like a cafe. I was trying to explain how Gothic Revival architecture gave way to the architecture of the twentieth century as a result of philosophy being shifted to a more egalitarian from a more stratified or hierarchical outlook. But I kept messing up on the centuries and on the names of different styles of architecture. I think I may also have visualized some of the modern architecture and realized I actually hated it.

Dream 2

I walked down steps into a subway. A few people came walking up, including a black boy and girl who walked up near the same handrail I held going down. I could see that the guy saw me and that he wasn't getting out of my way. But I wouldn't move, either. The girl moved into the middle of the stairway.

I got right up to the guy. We both stopped. He stared at me and wouldn't move, so I shoved him. He shoved me back, but I shoved him again, harder.

The boy yelled, "Why did you do that? You only had to get out of my way!"

I told him, "You should have gotten out of my way. I had the right of way."

He didn't know what I was talking about.

I said, "When you walk down the street, or down stairs, or whatever, you always take the right hand side, like you do in driving. It's just being polite. If you had been on your right side and I would have run into you, then you'd be right to yell at me, cause I'd have been on the wrong side."

He said, "Oh, well that makes a lot of sense." He gave me five and walked up the steps.

I walked down, feeling bad that I had given the kid such a speech. And I had only done it because I felt like he had made me late.

I got onto the platform. It was like the platform at the Union Square subway station, only bigger and darker, like it was shut down or under construction. A few people stood here and there along the platform. There was a train stopped, with its doors open, on the left side. I knew that was the train I wanted, but that it was held in the station while it changed service (from being a XXXXX train to being a XXXXX train).

I denied to myself that I had to get on that train, insisting that a fast XXXXX train would come on the right side. But I knew, even as a train pulled up, that that was silly; the trains on the right side would get me totally lost.

I was a little angry again, and I still didn't want to get on the left train. I knew that if that kid hadn't gotten in my way (or if I had just gone out of my way), I would actually have caught a quick XXXXX train.

(4/2/06) bracelet and eyeglasses; derailed subway train

(Entered in paper journal at 2:02 PM at Starbucks on Pearl Street and Hanover Square in Manhattan.)

Dream 1

Two images. First, a bracelet, on an arm (right arm?), that changed from one style to a band of "pearls" that were more like small, circular diamonds set or strung closely together. The diamonds were maybe one-tenth of an inch in diameter and were placed ten to the width of the band. Second, eyeglasses, the frames of which were "chains" of dull, silvery metal that was thin but stiff.

Dream 2

I was on a subway train traveling above ground. I was trying to figure out if I was on the right train to get home. I was talking this over with my friend M from the Americorps program I'd done with the New York City Parks.

I figured we were on the right train. But then we made a turn off one set of tracks and onto another that headed away from "the river." I was a little panicked, but more upset that I'd have to backtrack to get back to the right train.

Now the train headed up a bridge. At first the train went on a set of tracks. But then it started traveling on the road. I was afraid. M and I screamed. But I think eventually we started cheering.

(9/9/09) all you had to do was ask; sky's the limit

(Entered in paper journal at 6:12 AM on B-train into work from Brooklyn.)

Dream #1

I was on the subway, sitting in a row of seats that went along the wall of the train. Across the train from me sat an older, white man. He was opening and shuffling his newspaper loudly and whistling an annoying tune. I tried to whistle in an annoying way to counter the man's whistling, but I only managed a dry, creaking sound that was more pathetic than annoying.

I got angry and decided to confront the man physically. I walked across the aisle and sat beside the man. I noticed he was wearing earbuds, probably for an iPod. I tore them out of his ears. The man looked at me as if wondering why I would have done something like that.

I told the man, "Quit whistling" (or "Quit making annoying sounds"?) "on the train!"

The man said, "Well, if that's all you wanted, all you had to do was ask."

Dream #2

Somebody spoke to me about something like wanting the sky or going to the sky, because the sky's the limit.

(9/28/09) everybody plays the fool

(Entered in paper journal at 9:04 AM at Red Horse cafe in Brooklyn.)

Dream #1

I was on a subway train with a group of friends, including people from the job I had been laid off from at the beginning of the year. The train looked like the dream-train from Neon Genesis Evangelion. It was very classical looking. It may have been flooded with sunlight at the beginning, but eventually it was lit by a whitish fluorescent light.

I spoke with my old co-worker DE for a couple of minutes, probably apologizing for something. But DE told me I didn't need to worry about it. He may have told me that whatever I was apologizing for was something everybody did. To prove his point, he may have told me a story about when he had done something very similar.
