Dream 1
I headed for the self-checkout lines in a grocery store that was lit dimly, like a large warehouse. I had given a great deal of attention to what I had been shopping for, though I don't remember anymore what it all was.
A few people stood in line in front of me, or, rather, we all gathered in line in close time so that I was last in line, but arrived in line maybe a fraction of a second after the first in line. But everybody parted when they realized I stood behind them, as if obliged to let me go by simple, polite repayment for having jostled ahead of me.
The front guy was kind of wiry, small, with a head of loosely curled, black hair. I felt bad for going ahead of everybody. The checkout stands looked like they were set crooked or like they were set in an obscure corner, like where a customer service booth or a pharmacy booth might be.
I went to a stand beside a stand where a lady was checking out items. I only had one carton, one quart, of milk I sat it down on the scanner and then lifted it up and held it in my left hand.
A nine-squared menu appeared on the touchscreen. It led to another nine-squared menu which led to the last menu I remember, which, though still in the nine-square format, only had the first five squares as options, i.e.
as opposed to
I don't remember the first two menus, except that each option-button had a picture on its top half and an item name on its bottom half, i.e.
Each screen I reached made me more and more worried that I was messing up my item choice and that I would end up having to pay more money than I actually had. Each time I touched the screen I felt as giddy as I would on a high-wire. The words were so misleading, and the pictures were only obtuse indicators of the product.
In the last screen there were pictures of the milk carton, something like the Tuscan milk carton illustrations. I thought the first button's picture was of my milk. But I read the word "skim" below the picture. I knew that wasn't it. There were pictures of old, unpainted, wooden barns and fields of tall, green grass. Then there was another picture, of a milk carton. One of the buttons' words was something like "magnesium."
I was about to choose the second milk carton button, but the word was "testicular." I stood there for a second, trying to figure out what the hell kind of milk I had, and whether I had made a mistake in one of the first two screens.

(12/31/05) it's been a long walk down
(Entered in paper journal at 9:15 AM at Starbucks on 1st Street and 7th Avenue in Brooklyn.)
Dream 1
I was in a grocery store with my mom and some younger boys, who were very skinny, maybe Hispanic, and very lively. I hadn't wanted to come to this store because I had been involved in an awkward situation here.
My mom had a food product in her hands. She didn't want it because it had gone bad. She was angry that the employees kept this food on the shelves long enough to go bad. She even took it as a personal affront.
I tried to encourage that feeling in her, partly because I didn't think this was a good store, but also because I wanted this to be the focus of our trip here, to lower the possibility of having whatever awkward situation I had been involved with being dug back up.
But my mom said, "Well, I'm just going to buy this one thing" (a vegetable, possibly leafy) "and then we'll go to the other store for the rest."
I now ran along in front of the checkout stands with the little Hispanic boys, who may have been my brothers, or maybe just my friends. We were throwing and kicking balled-up wads of tape. We started with a loose wad, then, disappointed with that one, kicked and threw a fuller wad. But both wads of tape were so light that the wind resistance always messed up their trajectory.
We stopped playing for a moment and walked outside. One of the boys (the older boy?) pulled a tape ball out of his pocket. He had it, and it was like it was his. But it seems now that I had felt stupid for the cheap way we had been playing our game, and that I had been looking for, and had finally found, the ball the boy just pulled out of his pocket, like I had vindicated myself. The ball was tape tightly wrapped around a rock and then pulled over with rubber bands. It bounced like a rubber ball.
We were about to start playing a game again. But I thought about how when we threw the ball at each other, in order to tag each other (?), the rock in the center would hurt us (especially me). I thought, It simply won't do to have such a big rock in the center.
I "saw" an x-ray image of the construction of the ball and watched the rock slowly melt to almost nothing. The rest of the tape ball pulsed. It was like a sack of living gel, a clear egg, woven through with red and amber veins.
A group of businessmen pulled up in a van. I got into the van with them. It was night. We drove through a big city. As we drove, a man told a story of a girl he knew who had died from a long illness or a big injury. The man remembered the girl fondly. He was old enough to be her father.
I tried to change the subject of the woman because we were going somewhere where the man would have to be positive. He caught my intention and got sugary and happy, exasperatedly "hopeful."
We drove past a new building of pink and green stone, the doors to which were set back under a corner columned around by polished columns of cubic, octagonal-faced blocks.
I was walking in a subway station, simultaneously (but not in the same space/time) accompanied by BA, the leader of the Americorps NYC Parks program I'd just finished, and "a girl from the second year" of the Americorps NYC Parks program I'd just finished. (The year I had been involved with had been the first of three funded years for this program -- which I think had been funded for additional years after its first three "pilot" years.)
There were a lot of people in the subway. We were all heading in the same directions. First we went down a long ramp from one platform to another. It was like beside us was a greasy, metal track that was constantly behind us, though it was really to our right.
As we went down this track, I asked BA/the girl if the second year Americorps folks were nicer to BA than the first-year folks had been.
BA said, "Oh, they act nicer on the outside. And there's less problems. But even still I run up against tiny hostilities, subtle ones. And I know even now that they don't like me and that they talk bad about me."
The girl said, "We don't like BA. I try to make sure he knows that whenever we see him."
We (the whole crowd) were now walking along a platform that turned left at the bottom of the ramp and didn't level off but continued downward less sharply. We walked forward, but it was like we were facing the tracks and moving sideways toward the end of the platform. The sign for the stop hung over the tracks, like it hangs over the platform in waking life. We then went down a long series of ramps and steps. The well was wide and steep and full of people.
I thought about BA's and the girl's comments. I wondered, Why do leaders give people such a hard time? BA can't be that bad a guy. But, then again, I'd never really stood up for him, either. If I were in BA's position, how would I react to all these women constantly tearing into me just because I'm a male and all these guys tearing into me just because I'm their boss?
When we got down from the long series of steps I looked back. The staircase seemed as large as a mountain. There may have been a time when we had ridden down a couple levels in a mine-shaft elevator-like vehicle (i.e. like in Neon Genesis).
I wondered if all this downward travel really was necessary.
We were at another platform. A lot of people stopped here to find standing spaces and wait for the train. But I turned right after the stairs and continued along the platform. I had, after all (?), only been going into the subway station because it was the only way I could get from one sidewalk to another nearby sidewalk.
The platform was still sloping downward. I thought, It's been a long walk down. Do I have to do all of this going back up?
The platform and tracks got wider and wider, like the train was in an 1800s-style station, a depot, or some iron-skeleton industrial warehouse. Occasionally there were columns of stairwells.
Then the platform sloped up a tiny bit and got a lot darker (as the size of the platform had increased, the light became dim, like in a big warehouse). It was as dark and purple as night. Now the platform opened out onto a hillside. It was a purple, starry night.
I thought something like, So that was the point of it all. I didn't have to go all the way back up. I'm already on the right level. I just went deeper in to get to the correct exit point.

(12/22/07) the fleshy tree; put it all on red!
(Entered in paper journal at 8:15 AM on Q-train from Brooklyn to Manhattan.)
Dream #1
I was on a sidewalk by a tall wall of black-grey, granite rocks. I was clipping vine-like weeds which had grown from the park, a hill of which crested at the top of the fence. I noticed, though, to my right, where the fence was lower, that as I clipped the weeds there grey fleshy, peach-colored, vine-like tendrils. They grew with speed and direction, something almost like will.
I thought, How can I stop these things from growing? I then thought, If these things have a will, are they angry at me for clipping them? I was afraid that the peach-colored weeds would do something like strangle me. But I kept clipping the green weeds around me because the wall really needed the cleaning.
I looked to my right again. The stone wall was gone. There was only a black-iron fence showing a lawn level with the sidewalk. On the lawn was a smallish (maybe fifteen-foot-tall) tree. I realized the peach tendrils hadn't been weeds, but the roots of this tree.
The tree grew a huge, peach-colored limb out of itself, as willed and flexible as the tendrils had been. I thought again that the limb was angry at me and wanted to do something awful to me by touching me. The limb grew into a shape like a phallus.
I stepped backwards, across the street. But then I thought, Wait. You've seen a tree like this before. It was in a dream. This is a dream, too. I was still afraid. But I thought that if I was having another dream with a tree like this, I might as well risk an encounter with the tree to see what it was all about, even if it did something bad to me.
I walked across the street again, toward the tree. As I did, the scene (and my consciousness of the dream) faded out.
I was now walking into something like a parking lot with a group of friends. I wanted to show my friends the tree, to see what they made of it. But the tree was now just a metallic pole, like the perforated poles for street signs.
A woman thought I was crazy for having called this thing a tree. But I knew the tree would reveal itself, mainly once prey had gotten close enough for it to attack.
I was mad that the girl thought I was crazy. I wanted to show her that I wasn't lying. I told her to go smack the pole. So she did. Something invisible smacked the girl on the arm. The girl was now interested, but not really concerned.
I got even angrier. I really wanted the girl to feel how afraid she should be. So I told her to bite the pole. The girl bit into the pole and growled like a dog. Then she stood up. She said, "See? Nothing happened."
But suddenly the girl's eyes went blank. The girl was trying to move, but it was like something was holding her head. Something pressed in on the girl's head. The girl got slapped around a couple of times by some invisible force.
Now the girl was kneeling before the group and directly in front of me. The girl was dressed like an old, Mexican peasant woman, with a dark shawl over her head. The girl was making a weird, hooting, pained noise.
The girl looked up at me. Her eyes had been poked out. But the tree was still attacking her, and now something even worse would happen. I thought, Why did I put her into that kind of trap?
Dream #2
I stood before a conveyor belt cash register in a grocery store. A skinnyish, baldish, white man with a prim attitude stood behind the register. The man had rung up my food order. But a person (an older man?) behind me pointed at a painting on the wall to my right. He said, "I'm intersted in buying that."
The cashier hadn't wanted to help me much in the first place. But now he took the occasion to ignore me completely. I had handed the cashier my money. He'd now dropped it onto the conveyor belt and walked slightly backward from the register, looking over at the painting. I tried to get the cashier's attention, so I could pay and leave. But the cashier wouldn't pay attention to me.
I looked at the painting. It was maybe twelve feet by twelve feet. The scene was a Seurat-style "park," but the painting style was very much like that of Gauguin, with deep and pale blues and deep and pale purples. I looked down at my money on the conveyor belt.
Now an Hispanic (or light-skinned black) woman, another worker, walked up to the register, possibly with another female worker. The woman took my bills off the conveyor belt. She asked me, "This is what you gave him?"
I said, "Yes."
She said, "You gave him way too much." She handed me back all my money. I probably kept $150 (???!!!) and handed back the rest. I tried to make a joke about having thrown down so much money.
There were a few people (friends?) around me. We were all laughing at something, I don't know what. I tried to make a joke along the lines that I had thrown down all that money because I thought we were at a casino. But my vision was cloudy and my brain was blurry, and I couldn't think of what to say or do. On top of that, nobody was paying attention to me. My friends were all laughing at some random thing. The cashier and her friend were talking to each other and not paying attention to me.
I threw my money back on the conveyor belt again, as if I were throwing chips on a roulette table. I felt stupid, first because I had thrown the money so messily and violently, and second because my mind was so cloudy that I couldn't think of what to say next.
I cried, "Put it all on red!"

(1/21/08) not an airport; yo-yo kiva; a real hole in the wall
(Entered in paper journal at 9:15 AM at Starbucks on Christopher Street in Manhattan.)
Dream #1
I was in a bus or van being driven to the airport. It was a grey, drizzly day. I sat near the front of the bus. The bus was empty except for me, the driver, and another man. The other man was slightly nervous. He told the driver, "I hear that when bad weather makes flight delays, they sometimes reroute you through different cities on different planes."
We drove along a group of planes that looked weird. One was a small jet with a very sleek face, like a Concorde mixed with a fighter jet. Another was an enormous plane with a very tall bulkhead (?).
The driver assured the man (as we dove around a large building with passenger drop-off areas for passenger for some airlines) that even if his flight got rerouted, he most likely wouldn't have to get on a flight that he didn't like.
I thought to myself, noticing that the driver was making a second round around a large building, that my flight was set to leave at XXXXX. It was already 12:19. Most airlines liked you to be present one hour early. But here I was, less than half an hour from my takeoff time, and still on the bus (which now seemed a lot like a plane).
I noticed that instead of airline signs in front of the building we presently drove around, there were signs for supermarkets (Albertsons?) and drug stores.
The driver said, "I don't see why I haven't found your airlines yet."
With some hesitance, not wanting to tell the driver how to do his job, I replied, "You drove the wrong way off the highway. This isn't the airport. It's just a shopping center." I pointed to my right and said, "The airport is back over that way and on the other side of the highway."
Dream #2
I and a small group of people looked down on a cylindrical hole dug in the ground. The hole was about eight feet deep and twenty feet in diameter. The floor and walls were smooth, probably soil. In the center of the floor was a small square dug out of the soil. There was also a rectangular niche of soil dug out all the way up one section of wall. Near the square on the floor was a pile of soil.
A blue toy like a yo-yo had been buried at a precise spot under that soil. Now we would fill the entire cylinder with soil, thus immovably fixing the blue toy in its spot.
But now we heard that GPS or satellite measurements showed that we had placed the toy in the incorrect space by just a few feet. We would have to unbury the toy, get rid of the soil, relocate the toy, then bury it under a pile of soil again, and again confirm our location.
I suddenly felt like all this activity was a joke, or that the people who were telling us how to do the job were laughing at us for actually taking such pains with the job, since it was all pretty useless, anyway. But I couldn't let myself believe that the job was useless, and I couldn't let myself believe that we were off in our burial location of the toy.
There might have been a white "X" somewhere on the ground, which had determined my choice. I felt like the "X" proved that I had put the yo-yo in the correct spot -- though the "X" was not under the pile of soil (i.e. it was not in the current location of the toy) and was almost on the opposite side of the circle. I was going to tell the people with me to fill the hole up as things were, that we were fine.
Dream #3
I was in a bus driving down a city street at night. I was a beautiful, rich woman. We drove down a street full of shop fronts and hole-in-the-wall bars. I thought wistfully about just relaxing and going into hole-in-the-wall bars. But I knew I couldn't. As the beautiful, rich woman, I had elevated myself to a position where I could no longer just pop into places like that. I could only allow myself to go to high-class places and events, like the one I was going to right now.
I saw one particular bar, which seemed to have no front wall at all. I stood in front of it, possibly as myself. The place was small, dimly candlelit, with a few tall-backed, black chairs, a couple tables, a small register-counter, and a long, black bench along the right wall.
Two women and one man walked around inside, talking about some way they had managed to trick somebody into giving them a good deal with something. One of the women, probably wearing a tiny, fluttery, pink skirt and a white tank-top, looked at me as if she were sexually attracted to me.
I walked into the bar. The two girls sat on the bench, the man in one of the seats. I thought I would sit between the two girls, to sit next to the girl I thought liked me.
But now Mexican man wearing a baggy, black, button-up shirt and black jeans, with long hair in a ponytail, sat down between the two women and held the girl in the pink skirt. The woman was obviously the man's girl. She had only been acting like she liked me in order to trick me into liking her. The man sitting in the chair now sat next to the other girl, so that now each woman was already with a man.
The four people continued talking about how they had gotten their way, how they'd tricked someone into giving them a good deal. The four of them looked at me and spoke with me as if they wanted me to be their friend. But I thought, There's no reason. There's nobody here for me to be with.

(7/27/08) store without workers; safety lesson; take it with you?
(Entered in paper journal at 7:45 AM at Starbucks on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.)
Dream #1
I was in an enormous grocery store all by myself at night or in the very early morning. The store had a few different sections, all of which were large, but some of which felt like convenience store aisles, small-town grocery store aisles, health-food store aisles, or regular grocery store aisles.
I was near the back of the store. There were wide window walls looking out at a black, empty parking lot. This section of the store had a strange shape, trapezoidal, almost, and there were checkout lanes set at an odd angle facing the window wall.
There were no workers at any of the checkout lanes. I wondered how I could buy the food I wanted. I walked up to one of the lanes and looked onto its conveyor belt. A couple folds of cash and receipts had been left on the belt. I figured people must have paid by leaving their money here for the workers eventually to pick up.
I threw some of my own money on the belt, as if I were paying for the food. Then I picked the money up again, hoping I could find somebody in here to pay, or not wanting to be accused of shoplifting if I'd walked out of the store after having left my money in the wrong place. I'm not sure I even had any merchandise with me at that point.
I wandered through another area of the store, through some dry goods shelves and past a packaged meat cooler. I was now holding a few items, including a bottle of Gatorade.
I was now outside the store, in the big parking lot. The parking lot was empty. I saw a fully lit grocery store. I walked toward it. I hadn't left any money for my merchandise. I thought that the lit storefront was the front part of the store I had just been in. There were people inside: I could see them. I figured I could pay them.
But it didn't quite make sense to me. The store I'd been in, it seemed, was on the other side of the parking lot. Plus, the piles of money I'd seen on the conveyor belt seemed to be payments left by people who'd been in the store before me. Nevertheless, I wanted to pay an actual person, so I would have a witness in case anybody tried to accuse me of not paying.
When I got to the front of the store I saw one kind of small checkout lane a few feet back from a metal detector. The store itself was huge, clean, and harshly white-lit. Everybody at the checkout lane was from the company I worked at.
One of the liaisons between the Sales department and the Research department, MA, stood leaning against the shoplifting scanner and facing the doorway. I said hi. He began complaining about things at our company, and possibly particularly about the bad quality of our company's research.
Dream #2
I was with a group of folks in the mountains. We were being educated on safety for some big project that used heavy machinery. It was day. We lay stomach-down with our heads over a steep cliff.
Our teacher mentioned people who weren't being safe. She told us the consequences those people would suffer. As an illustration an enormous tractor-shovel came tumbling over the cliff to our left. We watched as it crashed down below. The cab of the vehicle was dull silver. The shovel was dull blue. The cliff was rocky, with ledges or shelves coated lightly in snow.
Now another giant tractor shovel fell off the cliff. Our instructor spoke about in the first vehicle there had been no survivors. The second crash hadn't been so bad.
I saw one of the people in the first vehicle. He was a bald, white man, kind of punk-looking, very tough and fleshy. He might have been laying in the cab, covered in blood. He didn't look quite dead to me, even though it had been understood that all the people in the first vehicle had died immediately.
Now I was rushing through a hallway with a group of people, alongside a bed carrying the man. The bed and the man were very clean. The man may have been wearing an oxygen mask. His eyes were open. I thought, Perhaps what the instructor meant was that the man died not too long after having gotten to the hospital.
The man started nodding his head. I could hear the instructor say, "The man's brain was so damaged that he could respond to every stimulus only by nodding his head. He was in this frenzied condition until he died." For some reason I couldn't believe this was so. It seemed to me like somehow he was regenerating.
The hospital hallways were wide and elegant, with tan, polished, gravel-patterned (?) floors, glass-green walls, and slanted, glass ceilings. I stood in the hallway as the man was wheeled into a glass-walled room just out of my sight. Before me were windows warm with sunlight. Outside was a view like an enormous airstrip in the wintertime.
Dream #3
I was walking in a place that half looked like a backyard and half looked like an area around a building like a church or a small community center. I may have been speaking on my cell phone with my mom.
People started filing out of the building. They all looked like business people. I noticed that one of the people was Mayor Bloomberg. He wore a black polo shirt and whitish khakis. I was pretty impressed and turned as he passed me, thinking I might go say hi to him.
(Oddly enough, a very similar thing happened to me in waking life one early morning in the winter of 2011, right in front of Radio City Music Hall. In waking life, Mayor Bloomberg was, of course, wearing a suit, and he'd come out of a black SUV, accompanied by a small retinue of attendants.)
I turned around. In the group of people was another famous person I couldn't quite place. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, since I thought that would make me look suspicious somehow. So I just kept walking.
I was now in an enormous building which may have been a loading dock or an airplane hangar. Warm sunlight flowed into the building, giving the whole place an airy, yellowy feel.
Before me and at a small distance was a pile of boxes and furniture. I recognized this as being all my possessions. One of the boxes was broken open. Inside were books. Looking at the books I realized I was interested in a lot of them. I had originally packed this stuff away thinking I didn't want it anymore. Now I thought I did.
I thought I would try to carry all this stuff with me wherever I was going. But I knew that if I even took time getting everything all put back together I'd risk being late wherever I was going. If I tried to carry this stuff with me (and likely it would break and scatter all over the place as I was going), I would definitely be late and miss my flight or whatever was taking me wherever I was going.
I was talking with my mom on my cell phone again. My mom told me there was a post office or UPS right near where I was (I was at an airport). I could take all this stuff to the post office and they would box it (?) and send it to wherever I was going.
This plan didn't make sense to me. It seemed like I'd be wasting time trying to pack the stuff up and leave it here or trying to pack the stuff up and carry it with me. Nevertheless, I figured I would end up doing what my mom told me to do.

(12/15/08) looking for car in rain
(Entered in paper journal at 11:20 AM, on Q-train from Brooklyn into Manhattan.)
Dream #1
It was night. I was coming out of a grocery store which may have had all its lights off. There may have been occasional flashes of lightning. I walked out of the shopping area and into a little pre-entrance area (which would normally have vending machines, etc.), holding the door behind me as I walked through. The door may have been electric, but it may have needed to be held open since all the power was out.
A couple women walked out the door behind me, but one woman wouldn't walk out while I held the door. She held the door and pushed on it until I got the idea and let go.
I walked out to the covered walkway that opened to the parking lot. It was raining heavily outside. There seemed to be a good amount of people rushing to and fro in the rain. The rain was so heavy it looked like a slightly luminious, grey cloud of impenetrable mist.
I was prepared to run through the rain to my car. I knew my umbrella would only slightly protect me, but that I would only get moderately wet if I hurried.
But I then realized that I had no idea where my car was in the parking lot. I was simultaneously trying to remember where my car was and trying to figure how wet I would get if I just made a mad dash through all the rows of the lot until I found my car.

(2/6/09) dying customer; storm at the panty shop; you aren't funny; lesbians and rituals; breaking to pieces; swarm of bees
(Entered in paper journal at 9:45 AM at Starbucks on Twenty-ninth Street and Park Avenue.)
Dream #1
A television show with a group of people, possibly teenagers, like a cartoon, except possibly live action. The kids had been drawn to a place that looked like a beach-view balcony deck on a sunny day. I may now have been in the group of teenagers. We stood before a glass double door, the doors (or one door?) of which were swung inwardly open.
A little person or creature had lured us this far. I now felt like he had tricked us into coming here so his master could do something to us. The little creature walked halfway into the left side of the threshold, pushing the door even more open.
The boy leader of the group of teenagers (maybe I was the leader) was now to follow the creature. The creature magically shrank the boy. I could see the boy's (my?) shadow on the ground. As the boy shrank, the shadow stayed the same size.
The creature had the boy floating in the air. He levitated the boy over to a chair inside the room. The room was slightly dim, as if all the curtains were closed but there were still plenty of natural light coming into the room.
The chair at first had thin, wooden legs and green, plush cushioning for the seat and back. But for a moment the whole scene became a cartoon. At this point (and possibly even when the scene changed back into live action) the chair was wooden, like the chair for a school desk. The room, which had previously been like a room in a resort, was now more like a mix between that room and some kind of mountain-roadside grocery store.
The creature had told the shrunken boy that he would find shoes for the boy. The shoes would, of course, be enormous to the boy, who was now perhaps an inch tall at most. Nevertheless, the boy would have to pay for the shoes. This itself was some kind of torture for the boy.
Behind the chair was a wall of grid-like shelves or cubby-holes, with shoes in every cubby-hole. To the left of the chair was the cashier's counter, which also somehow looked like a concierge's counter. A rough-looking man, perhaps a little stout, Hispanic looking, with a dark blue winter jacket and a wool cap, stood behind the desk. Behind him may have been wooden shelves stacked with old-looking canned and boxed food.
Another man leaned on the right side of the counter. Before him were two open boxes of shoes. A man stood across from him. Both men were rough-looking, both wearing winter clothes. The man on the left was huge, at least a head taller than the other two men, and pretty heavy. The man on the right was also big, though not as big. He looked a little tougher and more cunning. He wore a black, leather jacket, a little big on him. The man on the left wore a slightly padded black jacket with a grey, hooded sweatshirt underneath.
The man on the left was a customer. The man on the right was the boss of the store. The boss was trying to rip off the customer. I could see the shoes (in the right box?) he was trying to sell the customer. The shoes were too small. At first they were like dark brown leather loafers, the kind with the chunky seams and cords of leather binding the seams around the toes. But then the shoes became wood. They looked like clogs.
The customer said, "I don't want these. These aren't what I asked for at all."
The boss sneered, "What do I care? What do you want me to do about it?" I could now tell the boss was some kind of crime boss.
The customer said, "You can give me my money back!"
I knew the situation was going to get dangerous. The boss said, "I'm not gonna do that."
The customer said, "Alright. Have it your way, then."
The customer reached into his left pocket. He was about to pull out a gun. But with lightning speed the boss pulled a gun from his right pocket and fired a few shots into the customer's gut. For a moment I could see the customer's font as if his skin were transparent. I could see the customer's torn intestines.
The customer was dazed, as if shock had already caused him to forget he'd just been shot. He stood like a robot as the boss said, "Now what are you gonna do? Come back tomorrow and give me trouble?"
The customer said, "I just might."
The customer turned and walked out the exit (which was another double-door of glass to the left, with the doors open). Outside was a grey stone courtyard, in bright grey light as if it were a cloudy day.
The customer got a few steps outside and then fell over, to a hunched or kneeling position. Blood had just now begun to gush out from his abdomen. The customer might also have started throwing up blood. The customer was now in a position like a "weak man's push-up," i.e. on all fours, with the legs together and arms out about shoulder-width, but with the body bent in the middle so that the man's bottom was poking up in the air.
The customer's abdomen would plop out a bloody mass, then hold off and then plop again.
The customer called to the boss, "Hey, XXXXX, I don't think I'll becoming back next week or next month or even next year. In fact, I don't think I'll ever be coming here again!" He was saying this as if the boss were his friend, a superior friend, like the boss of a crime gang in which both men had been involved. It was also like the customer had just realized he was dying and he was now imploring the only nearby person who knew him at all to give him sympathy as he was dying.
The boss just looked on as if the customer's whole situation was just silly and pathetic.
Dream #2
I walked into a discount clothing store. The store may have been set up into tiered or stair-stepping levels, going higher and higher farther back into the store. I had come in here to find some sexy panties at a cheap price. The store was full of wife-like women in their thirties or forties. They were mostly overweight. Some were Hispanic, some were white. I was relieved that I didn't see anybody I knew or any rough-looking men who might make fun of me for being a man and shopping for panties.
I went a few rows back. I saw a few different displays of lingerie. Some looked either too small or strappy in the crotch for me to fit into. Other stuff looked too boring or to large.
I found a few racks or displays of stuff that looked like it might be really nice. But I would see it too late each time, as I passed it. I would try to turn around and go back to it, but the aisles would either be blocked by people standing fully in the middle of the aisles or charging forward so aggressively that I was afraid to move against them; or else I wouldn't want to catch the eye of a remotely pretty woman or someone who might even possibly know me.
Eventually I thought I saw a way to charge straight back to all the places I missed. I walked quickly and aggressively through a tangle of women, carts, even half-broken or skewed-over racks of clothing. I didn't care who I rushed through.
But I eventually just rushed down a ramp and into a line for the cashier. I wasn't in line. I stood just to the side. But I stood waiting as if I were standing in line. The front of the line was a huge mess of people and carts and cluttered merchandise.
Most of the people in line were women, but there was at least one man: a skinny, scrappy, chicken-shit-looking black-Hispanic boy dressed as a worker in a blue polo shirt and tan khakis, like a Best Buy worker might wear.
This guy was flirting with one of the women. I felt like this guy was standing around right here because he wanted to make sure that I wasn't flirting with any of these women and that he was. But I didn't want any of these women -- they all looked like worn-out housewives.
I wanted to get out the door and away from this guy. But now I saw that outside it was starting to rain. The rain got harder and harder very quickly. Now it was storming riotously. The sky was dark grey, and the pounding of the rain against the windows was deafening.
A young, black woman, a little overweight and plain-looking, with darkish orange hair, and also wearing an outfit like that of a Best Buy employee, held me back, pushing me into a huge crowd of fat mothers, from the front of which I'd just emerged.
The girl told me, "You can't go outside. The news just said the weather is a disaster situation. Everybody has to stay inside wherever they are, and the workers have to make sure that everybody stays put." The woman said all of this to me with motherly concern, as if I were a cute boy she felt she had to take care of.
The weather got worse and worse. The girl assured me that everything would be okay, that the storm was getting to its most intense point, and that it would then stop immediately, and that everybody would be alright.
Now the building itself was rocking, as if there was an earthquake. I might have closed my eyes in terror. Suddenly everything was swept away. It was like the building and all the people had been ripped upward by a cyclone. For a moment I stood in the whirling rain. Then all the grey was like a calm, impenetrable fog. Suddenly all was dark.
I saw a house, or a cartoon image of a house, with a red walkway leading up to it. I might also have seen myself as a cartoon, with the house behind me, a small image behind me, with everything else being a black background.
Dream #3
I stood in a place like a bathroom. The room was nice, and it had some of the length and narrowness of a hallway, which I may have thought it was. The walls and floors had a color and shine like finished wood.
I walked past a woman to my left. The woman was short, overweight, white, with shoulder-length black hair and black-rimmed glasses (like a woman I'd occasionally spoken with at Connecticut Muffin in Windsor Terrace, a young teacher who lived in Brooklyn but taught way up in upper Manhattan).
The woman sat on a low seat and had her legs up, possibly on a footstool or a wicker box. Before her was a sink. But the sink (it seems now) was so close to the woman's seat that the woman couldn't possibly have stretched out her legs the way she was stretching them.
I handed the woman a stack of pages (typewritten?). I also told her about ideas I was having, as if they were the ideas on the pages, i.e. as if I hadn't yet typed the pages. The woman said, "Those are really good ideas! You and I should work together. We could even get a show on the community television channel! I think you and I would work together really well."
I sheepishly said, "Yeah, that sounds cool!" But I really didn't want to do anything like that at all.
The woman said, "If I had a little boost from your enthusiasm, I'm sure I could really show what a creative and hilarious person I am."
I said, "Yeah, that sounds true." But in my head I thought, You really aren't funny at all.
Dream #4
I was walking on a park or greenbelt path in the sun. It was a nice, warm day. I may have come from some office building. I may also have been carrying a stack of papers in my hand. Oddly, in spite of the heat, I may have been wearing a long, grey, tweed trench coat.
I may have felt a slight twinge of embarrassment from the social situation I had just come from, as if I had pitched a creative idea which was thought o as impractical or eccentric, so that I'd even had to laugh at myself.
But somehow, most of the embarrassment, which had been kind of goodhearted, anyhow, melted away in the beauty of the day. There were tons of people all laying out sunbathing on the strip of lawn, which sloped up, on my left, gently to the street level. To my right may have been a river. I felt happy to see all these people as I walked along. Many of the people were beautiful. The light was at times dim and golden like winter afternoon light and at other times bright and colorful like an unseasonably warm spring day.
A couple of beautiful women caught my eye. The two girls were spooning with each other. The girl in back also had her hand on the front girl's bottom. This turned me on.
The two girls may possibly have been half-covered by a brown blanket. They were both blonde and tan and they both wore two-piece swimsuits. The girl in back wore a neon pink, full-bottomed two-piece. The girl in front wore a thin, white bikini with pink decorations on it like you might see on a pretty pair of cotton panties. The bottom of the girl in back really turned me on.
But the girl in back turned her head and saw that I was looking at her and her girlfriend. She may have covered herself and her girlfriend up even more with the blanket, although I feel like what she actually did was take the blanket off altogether, exposing herself and her girlfriend to me altogether, as if to make the point obvious that the two girls were together and happy and that they didn't care at all about me, even if I was looking at them. I felt as if I had been tricked, as if the girls had half-exposed themselves to turn me on, only to fully expose themselves and jilt me, getting pleasure out of being wanted but unattainable.
I looked out at the rest of the people, half out of wanting to show the girl how quickly I could put her and her girlfriend out of my mind, and half out of sheepish shame, like feeling sorry that somebody -- anybody -- had felt their privacy invaded by my having looked on at them for too long.
I was suddenly annoyed by the crowd of people, possibly as if I realized that I couldn't find a place to lay down here, and that even if I did, I'd still have to contend with all the people who were elbow-close with me. I sped up my walk. Now there were also people walking along the path. I had to doge all of them. Suddenly I came to a walkway that went down a steep slope.
I had just now been thinking to myself about a group of people who had come here from across the seas to perform some kind of religious ritual. I thought, Perhaps there are so many people out here because they all want to see the ritual. But then I realized that the ritual had been over for at least a day. I thought, It's possible the people have gotten back on their ships to go home.
The path I was on was very steep. It was made of asphalt. It worked it was way around the bend of a grey rock face.
I was now descending a grass slope. I had to get onto a thin, dirt path, as if I were on the edge of something, and if I didn't get onto the dirt path with jet-like precision, I'd fall off the edge. I was suddenly giddy with a fear of heights and worry over my aim.
Down below, in a valley, were a thin group of people who looked like Indians or Native Americans. They were running form the shore, planting flag-like stakes of gnarled branches (with bright rectangles of fabric at their tops) into the ground, then running back to the shore.
I thought, Well, they still have more ritual to perform, even though the official ritual is over. But people must only care about the official ritual. The rest isn't famous enough for them to want to be a part of it.
I now came to a tan and orange stone, maybe sandstone, land feature that was like the entrance to the cave, but that also looked like a Utah-style stone arch. It was like this land feature appeared out of nowhere -- my view below had been unobstructed before. It seemed like the land feature was just a shallow tunnel, which would be pretty easy to get through and rather beautiful to look at. Plus, I thought, with this thing blocking out all the scenery, I won't be as afraid of the steepness and height of this path (which was asphalt again).
But as I approached the mouth of the cave, a tiny, black, bee-like insect flew out. I knew the little bee's sting could be rather irksome, but I thought the insect was such a cute, little creature. I turned backwards to look at it.
Behind me were natural walls, all of this tan and orange stone, thought which the path I was on snaked upward. The bee hovered in a pool of sunlight. I greeted the bee and said a few kind, happy words to it. Then I turned forward again.
Now the tunnel was very shallow, a few feet only, like the turning of a corner. I could even see the people in the valley again. But now the dirt path was either unseen or in a different place than I had previously been aiming for. I may have thought to myself how I had screwed up by having turned around instead of continuing forward when the bee had come out of the cave.
Dream #5
A vision of the walls of a library (the "New York Public Library"). The walls were a porous white stone, like the sidewalks and walls of the Grace building. They broke into vertical panels, which clattered more and more apart form each other. As they did this, I saw an old, skinny, wise-looking man beside me (and looking down to me) talking to me. But the sound was muffled and tinny, like my perceptions were blurring or dissolving. Somewhere else there was a solid wood wall, which was also breaking into pieces.
Dream #6
A swarm of tiny, tight, dull yellow and black-grey bees stopped me from walking around a curve (and to the right) of a tiny path in a little, green-lawned park. Somewhere near me may have been a group of my friends, who may have laughed at me for being afraid and stopping at the swarm of bees.
(11/2/09) hard times grocery store
(Entered in paper journal at 7:40 AM at Red Horse cafe in Brooklyn.)
Dream #1
I was in a grocery store. I was near the back of the grocery store, which was dim, as if only a few of the lights were on somewhere near the front of the store. The grocery store was large, but it had a little bit of a run-down small store feel, like an old bodega or deli in Brooklyn.
Something had happened in the world so that food was now running out. The food supply in the world might eventually be replenished, but there was definitely going to be a period of time where the only food we had would be the food that was left.
I was hopping along the tops of the shelves, from aisle to aisle. The shelves were all half-empty and filled largely with bags of dry goods, like cereal. I realized that a lot of the good food in the world had already been taken, and that all that was left was this second-rate food that nobody wanted and which wasn't really nutritious.
I was running around on the top shelves at the back of the store. A man and a woman, a couple, either Hispanic or black, now walked around near the shelves I was on. They were talking back and forth, probably about the food they'd buy. I didn't want them to see me. I was afraid that once they noticed me they'd start acting really annoying.
